9/11/2023 AMALFI: Amalfi Resort, Duomo di Amalfi, shopping, pool time, dinner Taverna Buonvicino, hit by car on walk back to hotel

Our first breakfast.  We had left our filled out card on the reception desk last night with our choices for breakfast marked.  Time we picked 8:30 am.  We were the only ones in the breakfast room/area.  No one was outside either.  We selected  juice, fruit, meats-ham and salami, cheese,  bread, croissant, slice of cake.  Butter and jam.  Cappuccino.  The fruit was not as I expected.  On a plate-an apple, a pear, a banana, a plum, and a kiwi.  Way too much for us so I told the nice women who prepared our breakfast that tomorrow for fruit maybe just an apple or pear.  By now I'm really starting to miss the kind of breakfasts I have back home-bagel with cream cheese, eggs over easy, crispy bacon.....

We slowly walk down the road to where we will get to the Duomo.  We pass several stores that look very appealing.  Maybe later on the way back to our hotel.  Most things have a lemon theme.  Hats with lemons, totes with lemons, shirts with lemons....  I guess you get the picture.  Plenty of places selling souvenirs like postcards, candy, even food items if you want to do your own cooking.........When we get to the piazza where the Duomo is we take a look at the fountain.  I'm not sure what it is but it's interesting.  Later I would google this and get more in formation.  It appears that this fountain is dedicated to St. Andrew the Apostle.  Baroque style.  Features St. Andrew, nymphs, and cherubs symbolizing the city's connection to its patron saint and maritime connections.  Built  in 1760.  Originally stood at the foot of the cathedral steps but was moved to its current location n the late 1800s.  I'm guessing the water flowing is safe to drink as I spot someone doing just that.  Great gathering place.  There's also a pharmacy right here just in case...........

Duomo di Amalfi. Medieval Roman Catholic cathedral in the Piazza del Duomo.  It is dedicated to the Apostle Saint Andrew whose relics are kept here.  Begun in the 9th and 10th centuries it has been added to and redecorated many times.  It includes the adjoining 9th century Basilica of the Crucifix.  There's excellent signage.  Well worth a visit.  We spend around 80 minutes at this complex.  Don't remember what we paid but it was not pricey and you get a nice pamphlet which has pictures and information about this complex.

Shopping on the way back to our hotel.   I buy candy for my grandson Ronan.  He's got a sweet tooth like his grandma Chris.  I get different varieties.  From different stores.  All are a mix of lemon and orange.  Two packages of jellies, 1 package of plain hard candy, and 1 package of hard candy with citrus drop inside.  A place selling ceramics.  I fall in love with a small plate.  It's so pretty with Amalfi lemons on it.  Cost 12€/$12.90.  A bargain.  Oh, I see a place selling chocolate.  Lots of chocolate.  Nino and Friends.  Samples of the truffles. So good!  I buy 3 tiny boxes of truffles, a small box of orange peel, and a jar of lemon marmalade.  Cost 32.50€/$34.92.  I also stop at a store right before our hotel.  I'm intrigued by all the spices for pasta so I buy 3 packages of spices and also a package of ready to cook zucchini risotto.  Cost 25€/$26.87. As we walk I see a restaurant really close to our hotel-further away from the central part of town.  There's a big sign displaying breakfast and I see a picture of eggs the way I have them when I'm home.  I've decided that we will try this place for breakfast tomorrow.

Pool time.   In the pool by 2:15 pm.  We relax here for 2 hours or so. Plenty of sun loungers.  Pool is small but is fine to cool off and relax.  I especially like the graduated steps at the one end entrance into the pool.  For me with my mobility issues and being older it was very much appreciated.  Pool is not heated but water felt ok after you got in and adjusted to that initial feeling of cold water.

Richard is always happy when he's by the pool

Taverna Buonvicino.  We have a dinner reservation here for 8:00 pm.  A little bit of difficulty finding the place.  We ask a guy for directions and he says "follow me, I'm going there" so we do.  It's a walkway off the main road and you have to go up several stairs which isn't fun.  Finally we see some signs and then the restaurant.  Thanks to the nice man that helped us out.  Several are waiting outside.  It appears they don't have a reservation.  Inside and outside seating.  We prefer inside.  Fortunately we get seated in a few minutes.  It's extremely busy and it looks like there's just maybe 3 servers working?  It takes a while before we even get menus.  Not a lot of options but enough variety for all.  Drinks-I want to try a negroni (gin, compari, sweet vermouth) as I've never had one and later it will be a good choice.  Richard is a beer lover so it's Birra Artigianale/Bionda Amalfitana/Melphi's.  I guess it's made in Amalfi?  I select the linguine with vegetables and Richard gets grilled codfish with peppers, capers, and olives.  My pasta was cooked perfectly as were the vegetables-al dente.  Richard said his fish was done just right.  Easily flaky, not overdone.  The bread arrives inside a paper bag.  That's different.  It's warm and tasty.  We eat it all.  Good service considering how busy it was and the limited numbers of servers working.  Throughout dinner those servers were on the go!  Cost 76€/$81.67.

Slow walk back.  Walking back my husband is behind me.  We're walking single file real close to the buildings on the right side so I can window  shop.  Not many people out as stores are closing.  As we're getting closer to our hotel I feel something hit me.  I'm taken aback.  A car stops.  Window rolls down and the driver asks my husband if I'm alright.  A man comes running out of the store where we are.  I am in a bit of a daze.  (That negroni probably helped mitigate my reaction!) What happened?  It appears per my husband that this car came fast up the road and the passenger side mirror on his car hit my left arm.  I'm shaken but I keep saying "I'm ok, I'm fine".  It was a black Audi.  Later I tell my husband if it had been a Bentley I would have fallen to the ground!  What was this driver thinking!   There's no traffic coming down the road from the other side.  He had plenty of room.  Why is he driving way over to where the small pedestrian walkway is?  Oh well.  I wasn't injured.  Never even developed a bruise.  This is definitely not how I expected the day to end!  Tomorrow if the weather looks good I think we will go to Capri.
