9/22/2023 ROME: Mercure Roma Centro Colosseo, breakfast Ciuri Ciuri, Capitoline Museum, Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain, dinner Trevi Pizza, Trevi Fountain at night

Some hotel guests we met at the pool yesterday told us about this place for breakfast right next to our hotel.  So we're going to check it out this morning.  We exit the hotel, go to our left, walk around 2 minutes, and it's right there.

Ciuri Ciuri.  Breakfast.  Small place with around 4 tables inside and some outside.  Stand in line and place your order.  Two guys working.  Super friendly.  Mostly breakfast sandwiches and pastries.  Not a huge menu but it has what we want.   Juices, coffee.  I don't believe it!  I see a sugar donut like I have gotten back home.  I get that, an orange juice, and a cappuccino.  It's really good and hits the spot.  Richard gets a ham and egg panini sandwich and a cappuccino.  He likes his choice.  Super.  It's so close to us.  No taxi needed!  Cost 19.50€/$20.82.  And when the guy brings our food over to our table he takes a picture of us!!

They even have some gelato!

Capitoline Museum.  I didn't realize it but this is right next door to the Victor Emmanuel Monument!  We could have seen this the other day!  Taxi-cost 12€/$12.81.  So much to see.  I really didn't prepare well enough for this as it looks like we never got to the other part-Palazzo Nuovo!  A bit confusing as it wasn't made clear about the corridor that connects the museums.  Piazza del Cappidoglio.  In 1471 Pope Sixtus IV donated a collection of important ancient bronzes to the people of Rome and located them on the Capitoline Hill, one of the 7 hills of Rome.  Since then it has grown to include ancient Roman statues, medieval and Renaissance art, collections of jewels/coins.  Museums owned and operated by the municipality of Rome.  Statue of the mounted rider in the center of the piazza is of Emperor Marcus Aurelius.  This is a copy with the original inside the Capitoline Museum.  Considered one of the oldest museums in the world.  Palazzo dei Conservatori-ancient sculpture mostly Roman.  We spend 2 hours here.  Another taxi to Piazza Navona.  Cost 6€.

Piazza Navona.  The fountains of the buildings surrounding the elongated oval of this piazza were the ruined grandstands of the vast stadium of Domitian.  Main style of the area is Baroque.  Many buildings here are dating from when Innocent X Pamphilj was pope in the 17th century.  He was a patron of Bernini and Borromini.  There are 3 important fountains here.  Fontana del Moro with a basin and 4 Tritons sculpted by Giacomo della Porta in 1575.  In 1673 Bernini added the statue of a Moor wrestling with a dolphin.  Then the famous Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi/Fountain of the Four Rivers.  Pope Innocent X Pamphilj commissioned Bernini to sculpt this fountain.  Gian Lorenzo Bernini 1651. Travertine rock.  Topped by the Obelisk of Domitian-symbolizes Papal power surmounted by the Pamphilj symbol of the dove.  Brought here in pieces from the Circus of Maxentius.  This fountain depicts the Gods of the 4 great rivers in the 4 continents recognized by Renaissance geographers.  The Nile in Africa, the Ganges in Asia, the Danube in Europe, and the Rio de la Plata in Latin America.  Each location also has animals and plants of that country.  The Nile's head is draped with a loose piece of cloth meaning that no one at that time knew exactly where the Nile's source was.  The Ganges carries a long oar representing the river's navigability.  The Danube touches the Papal coat of arms since it is the largest river closest to Rome.  And the Rio de la Plata is siting on a pile of coins which is a symbol of the riches the Americas might offer to Europe.  Has to be seen in circular motion walking around it.  Fountain of Neptune.  Once called Fontana dei Calderari due to being located close to a small alley with blacksmith's workshops.  Basin (without the sculptures) was designed in 1574 by Giacomo Della Porta who was also responsible for the Moor Fountain at the other side of the square.  Pope Gregory XIII.  Lower part of basin-white marble and upper part local stone.  Sculptures added 1873 Antonio della Britta-Neptune flying with an octopus.    There's the Sant' Agnese in Agone church.  17th century Baroque church facing onto the Piazza Navona.  Site where early Christian Saint Agnes was martyred in the ancient stadium of Domitian.  Main architect Francesco Borromini.  We spend an hour here.  It is almost 4:00 pm.  We need to find a taxi back to our hotel so we can shower and get ready for dinner.  Too tired for any more sightseeing today.  We had to walk a bit-as always-to find a taxi to take us back to our hotel.  Cost ??

Walking to find a taxi

Taxi back to our hotel

Back at our hotel we get ready to go to the Trevi Fountain and most likely get dinner nearby.  I also was finally able to book my tickets for the Colosseum!  No pool time today.

Trevi Fountain.  Taxi brings us here because even though we saw it on our vespa tour my coin never made it into the fountain.  Barricades were up as men cleaning out the coins so you couldn't get right up to the edge of the fountain.  And I have no arm throwing strength like my husband whose coin did make it in on our first day on 9/18.   Cost10.90€/$11.64. Designed by Nicola Salvi 1762.  Central figures are Neptune flanked by 2 Tritons.  One Triton trying to master a sea horse and the other is leading a docile animal.  This symbolizes the 2 contrasting moods of the sea.  Legend-toss 1 coin into the Trevi Fountain means you'll return to Rome; tossing 2 coins means you'll return and fall in love; tossing 3 coins means you'll return, find love, and marry.  Collected money from the fountain goes to charity-soup kitchens, shelters-to help poverty stricken communities.  This place is literally packed with people.  Taking selfies, tossing their coin.  I don't know how we manage it but we do  squeeze our way through to get that iconic picture of this famous fountain.  It's really beautiful to see it today without the barricades.  Richard takes a video of me tossing my coin and this time it makes its way into the water!  I'm happy!

Tossing my coin

Happy my coin went into the water!

Trevi Pizza.  There's lots of places to get a bite to eat so we decide to just have dinner right here by the Trevi Fountain.  A few minutes walk and we see this place.  It's busy.  I like the looks of it.  Luckily we get a table but it's outside which is fine!  Good people watching from our table.  The table next to us is pretty close and I like the looks of their drink.  I'm told it's sex on the beach.  So when asked for my drink order that's what I get.  I've never had this drink before.  It's really yummy and goes down nice!  Richard orders beer and he selects the large size.  When that huge mug is brought to the table he's one very happy guy! When we get our drinks we also get a small bowl of potato chips. We  order the margherita pizza and salad Mediterranean that has mixed greens, corn, cherry tomatoes, olives, cucumbers, carrots, and mozzarella cheese.  We share the salad and pizza.  Food is very good.  Service is good.  I order another drink-this time Hugo spritz.  Cost 70.40€/$75.17.

Trevi Fountain.  At night.  Different vibe.  Tons of people though.  This time I don't try to squeeze my way through.  I snap a few pictures and then we go looking for a taxi to get back to our hotel.  We pass lots of cafes/restaurants, shops....  Taxi back to our hotel.  Cost 10€.

Long line but for what??  I can't remember

A satisfying day.  My coin made it into the fountain!  Yay!!
